E-coating base coat: What is it?
Most all of our line of Steelcraft bumpers are E-coated. This is an important part of the process when it comes to protecting a heavy duty bumper. This coating is likely to never see the light of day, it just supports the subsequent coating on top. E-coating, short for electro-coating or electrophoretic deposition, is loosely defined as a corrosion-resistant primer process that uses an electric charge to evenly apply a protective paint layer to metal surfaces. The steel part is submerged in a bath of electrically charged paint particles, which are drawn to the surface and bond uniformly — even in hard-to-reach areas, seams, and corners. After coating, the part is baked to cure the finish, resulting in a thin, durable barrier that resists rust and prepares the surface for topcoats like powder coating or paint. E-coating is widely used in the automotive and heavy equipment industries for its excellent coverage, adhesion, and long-term protection.
